Welcome To Tariro Hope Project

Our Story..

‘Tariro’ meaning Hope in Shona (an African language) was born out of a death, a dream and a drive. The untimely death of a young mother of three, to AIDS, the dream of her sister to see these children have a good life and the drive in her to convince people to help her accomplish the extraordinary sowed the seeds of this project.

The year was 2004 and the woman was an ordinary lady named Rudi Gray. Originally, a native of Zimbabwe, she had made England her home for the last twenty three years. When she returned to her native land, she was appalled at the plight of her people, especially the children in her village. There had been a severe drought and as a result, there were no crops that year.

There was no school in the area and the nearest one meant a walk of 15 km everyday. Most of the children lived with their grandparents because they had lost their parents to the deadly scourge of AIDS which was rampant in the nation. Starvation, hunger, poverty, death.the children had seen it all

Rudi decided to adopt her sister’s children and brought them back with her to England. She realized that there were so many more such orphaned children back in her village and that she needed to act. With the help of her local church and some friends, she started the Tariro Project in April 2005.
